하나님의 나라는 말에 있지 아니하고 오직 능력에 있음이라-고린도전서 4:20
생태학자인 마이크 핸즈는 지난 20여 년 동안 중앙아메리카의 농민들이 농작물들을 좀 더 효과적인 방법으로 재배할 수 있도록 도와주는 일을 해 왔습니다. 그러나 전통적으로 오랫동안 해오던 “베어내고 태워버리는” 농사법이 토질을 파괴하고 공기를 오염시키는 것을 그들이 알면서도 옛 농사법을 포기하기란 그들에게 쉽지 않은 일입니다.
그래서 마이크는 말로만 하지 않고 그들에게 더 나은 방법을 직접 보여줍니다. 기록영화 ‘공중에 쌓인 연기’에서 그는 이렇게 말합니다. “실제로 보여주어야 합니다. 가르치려 해도 안 됩니다. 설명을 할 수가 없습니다. 사람들이 직접 손으로 해보고 또 눈으로 볼 수 있어야 합니다.”
바울은 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전하는 데에도 비슷한 방법으로 접근했습니다. 그는 고린도의 교인들에게 이렇게 썼습니다. “내 말과 내 전도함이 설득력 있는 지혜의 말로 하지 아니하고 다만 성령의 나타나심과 능력으로 하여 너희 믿음이 사람의 지혜에 있지 아니하고 다만 하나님의 능력에 있게 하려 하였노라”(고전2:4-5). 같은 편지에서 조금 뒤에 그는 다시 이렇게 말합니다. “하나님의 나라는 말에 있지 아니하고 오직 능력에 있음이라”(4:20).
하루하루를 살아가면서 말과 행동이 일치하도록 하나님께 도움을 구하십시오. 우리를 통해 하나님의 모습이 나타나게 된다면, 그것은 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 강력하게 보여주는 것입니다.

The kingdom of God is not in word but in power.

For 2 decades, ecologist Mike Hands has worked to help farmers in Central America adopt more effective methods of growing their crops. It’s difficult, however, for them to abandon their long tradition of “slash and burn” agriculture, even though they know it destroys the soil and pollutes the air.
So instead of merely talking to them, Mike shows them a better way.
In the documentary film Up in Smoke, he says: “It has to be demonstrated.
You cannot preach it. You can’t describe it. People have got to be able to get their hands on it and see it.”
Paul took a similar approach to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He wrote to the believers in Corinth, “My speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Cor. 2:4-5). Later in his letter, Paul told them again, “The kingdom of God is not in word but in power” (4:20).
As you live each day, ask God to help you accompany
your words with actions. When we allow God to show Himself
through us, it’s a powerful demonstration of His grace
